A National Highways Safety Alert (NHA359, 2025) highlighted the need to reduce driver confusion at construction sites by using worded speed limit signs instead of the numerical roundels used on public highways (TSRGD Fig. 670).

This change follows incidents where drivers and vehicle automation systems misread temporary speed limits, causing sudden braking and creating safety risks in traffic management zones. Alternative speed wording is available on request.
