FAQ – Tape

What is PTFE tape used for?

PTFE tape (also called thread seal tape or plumber's tape) is used to seal threaded pipe connections and prevent leaks. Wrap it clockwise around male threads before joining fittings. It's essential for plumbing, gas fittings, hydraulic systems, and any threaded connection that needs a watertight or airtight seal.

How should I store tape to maximise its shelf life?

Store tape in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Keep rolls in their original packaging or sealed containers to prevent dust contamination and moisture exposure. Most tapes last 1–2 years when stored correctly. Avoid storing tape on its side, as this can cause the adhesive to migrate and affect performance.

What tape works best in extreme temperatures?

For high-temperature applications, aluminium foil tape and silicone-based tapes perform best, handling temperatures up to 260°C. For cold environments or freezer applications, look for tapes with cold-temperature adhesives that remain flexible below freezing. Standard adhesives can become brittle or lose tack in extreme cold, so always check the tape's temperature rating for your specific application.

Can I use duct tape outdoors?

Yes, duct tape is designed for outdoor use and provides excellent resistance to moisture, humidity and temperature changes. Its strong adhesive and waterproof backing make it ideal for temporary repairs, sealing gaps, and securing materials on site.

For permanent outdoor applications or extreme UV exposure, consider specialist tapes designed for long-term weathering.
