FAQ | Automotive Electrical Cable & Wiring

What is the difference between automotive wires and battery / welding cables?

Automotive cables are ideal for general vehicle wiring, like lighting and accessories. Battery and welding cables, built for high current loads, are suited for tasks like battery-to-starter connections and high-amperage welding jobs.

What do the numbers mean in the automotive wire descriptions?

Cable descriptions give the number and size of cable strands, the total cross-sectional area of the conductor and the approximate outside diameter of the insulation. For example 9/0.30, 0.65mm² refers to 9 strands of 0.30mm diameter cable giving a total cable conductor area of 0.65mm².

How do I ensure safe connections with automotive cables?

Use secure terminals, make sure moisture does not come in contact with the connection and follow the correct crimping & insulation techniques during application.

Can I use general-purpose cables for automotive or battery / welding applications?

General-purpose cables are not recommended. Automotive and battery / welding cables are made to withstand high temperatures and potential exposure to corrosive elements.
