Set screws UNF are often used to hold objects in place on shafts or in tight spaces where a coarse thread pitch would be too large. This finds its application in smaller joints and areas where larger screws or nuts can not be installed. Set screws UNF have a fine thread pitch, which means that the distance between threads is measured in threads per inch. 

Common thread pitches for set screws UNF include 3/16 - 1 and 1/4-2. These can have either a hex head or a socket head, just like metric set screws. Hex head set screws typically require a wrench with a corresponding hex size. And socket head set screws require an Allen wrench with a corresponding socket size.
