How to use nylon and stainless steel cable tie guns

Cable Tie Guns & Installation Tools — Expert Guide

A cable tie gun is a professional device used to quickly tighten cable ties around objects to a specific, pre-set tension. Crucially, the device also has the ability to automatically cut off the excess "tail" of the cable tie tight against the head. This leaves a perfectly flush cut, ensuring there is no sharp plastic or metal hanging off that could cause injury or snag on delicate wiring.

You can use these devices anywhere — from DIY projects in the home and office cable management, to full-scale trade jobs conducted by builders and electricians. Cable tie guns are more than capable of handling high-volume, repetitive tasks effortlessly.

"The biggest mistake installers make is over-tightening nylon ties by hand, which damages the internal copper cores of data cables. A tensioning gun eliminates human error. By setting the exact tension required, the tool locks and cuts the tie perfectly every single time without crushing the bundle."

How to Correctly Use a Cable Tie Gun

Cable tie guns are very simple and easy devices to operate, making them ideal for electricians, mechanics, and facility maintenance workers looking to speed up their workflow.

Cable tie installation tools generally come in two different mechanisms depending on the size and material of the tie: Trigger Operated and Lever Operated.

1. Trigger Operated Cable Tie Tools

This type of tool is ergonomically designed in the shape of a pistol with a front-facing trigger. They are built for fast, one-handed operation.

Recommended Tools:

  • GCT48IT: Professional Cable Tie Installation Gun for Nylon ties up to 4.8mm wide.
  • GCTSSIT: Heavy Duty Installation Tool specifically for Stainless Steel Ties up to 7.9mm wide.

These guns usually feature a tension adjuster knob. You can set the strength level using the numbered dial on the handle to match your bundle's fragility and tie size.

2. Lever Operated Cable Tie Tools

Lever operated tools are often used for much wider, heavy-duty nylon ties where a massive amount of manual force is required to pull the thick strap through the locking mechanism.

Recommended Tools:

  • GCT109: Automatic Installation & Cutting Tool for Heavy Duty Nylon ties up to 13mm wide.
  • GCTNY90IT: Manual Installation & Cutting Tool for Nylon ties up to 12mm wide.

Standard Operation Instructions

Regardless of whether you are using a trigger or lever operated tool, the fundamental step-by-step process remains the same:

  1. Hand Tighten: Wrap the tie around the bundle or object you want to secure and pull it semi-tight with your hands first establishing a secure loop.
  2. Attach the Tool: Slide the open side of the gun barrel directly over the tail of the cable tie, pushing the tip of the tool safely against the locking head.
  3. Tension and Cut: Squeeze the lever or trigger continuously. The tool will pull the excess tail through the head until it reaches the requested pre-set tension limit.
  4. Automatic Flush Cut: Once the limit is achieved, a dedicated internal blade will automatically snap forward and shear off the excess plastic entirely flush with the head.
